Information-Distilling Quantizers

چکیده
Let X and Y be dependent random variables. This paper considers the problem of designing a scalar quantizer for to maximize mutual information between quantizer's output X, develops fundamental properties bounds this form quantization, which is connected log-loss distortion criterion. The main focus regime low I(X;Y), where it shown that, if binary, constant fraction can always preserved using O (log(1/I(X;Y))) quantization levels, there exist distributions many levels are necessary. Furthermore, larger finite alphabets 2 <; | xmlns:xlink="http://www.w3.org/1999/xlink">X ?, established that an ?-fraction roughly (log(| /I(X;Y))) ?·(|X| - 1) levels.

Distilling Reliable Information From Unreliable Theories
Suppose a domain expert gives us a domain theory which is meant to classify examples as positive or negative examples of some concept. Now suppose, as is often the case, that the expert speciies parts of the theory which might be in need of repair, as opposed to those parts of the theory which are certainly not in need of repair. We say that such a theory is partially mutable. There might be so...
متن کاملDistilling Information Reliability and Source Trustworthiness from Digital Traces
Online knowledge repositories typically rely on their users or dedicated editors to evaluate the reliability of their content. These evaluations can be viewed as noisy measurements of both information reliability and information source trustworthiness. Can we leverage these noisy evaluations, often biased, to distill a robust, unbiased and interpretable measure of both notions? In this paper, w...
متن کاملDistilling nonlocality.
Two parts of an entangled quantum state can have a correlation, in their joint behavior under measurements, that is unexplainable by shared classical information. Such correlations are called nonlocal and have proven to be an interesting resource for information processing. Since nonlocal correlations are more useful if they are stronger, it is natural to ask whether weak nonlocality can be amp...
متن کاملDistilling Information from Text: The EDS TemplateFiller System
A system is described which digests large volumes of text, filtering out irrelevant articles and distilling the remainder into templates that represent information from the articles in simple slot/filler pairs. The system is highly modular in that it consists of a series of programs, each of which contributes information to the text to help in the final analysis of determining which strings con...
متن کاملHow to Exploit Local Information When Distilling Entanglement
Distillation protocols enable generation of high quality entanglement even in the presence of noise. Existing protocols ignore the presence of local information in mixed states produced from some noise sources such as photon loss, amplitude damping or thermalization. We propose new protocols that exploit local information in mixed states. Our protocols converge to higher fidelities in fewer rou...
